It is an optional year. Today there are 58 students enrolled in Transition Year for the 2017-18 school year. Students are informed about Transition Year while in third year and they have time, together with their parents/guardians and with school management to make a decision.

The school has developed a programme for the year in keeping with the aspirations set down by the department of Education and Science. We aim to help the students to develop themselves in terms of personality, sociability, physical and intellectual and other knowledge.

Students continue to study and make progress in the core subjects like Maths, English, Irish etc. They will normally explore these subjects in ways which are different from the exam focussed approach necessary for the Junior and Leaving Certificates. They may use their skills to prepare a magazine or a film script, take part in debates or public speaking. The aim here is to keep them intellectually stimulated and to help them to continue to progress in their skills in these core subjects so that when they go into fifth year and begin to prepare for the Leaving Certificate, they will have greater maturity in dealing with the academic programme.

Students are also given the opportunity to experience the subjects that they will have to choose between in Senior Cycle. This gives them a chance to find out which subjects would suit them best in terms of their abilities and ambitions.

In keeping with the ideas of Multiple Intelligences and the broadening of the personality, students are also given the opportunity to do subjects and workshops in areas that they do not normally have access to in the school. This will involve music, theatre, art and crafts, cookery and nutrition, First Aid, drama workshops and performances, film-making, mini-company, organising activities for charity such as Hospice Coffee morning (thus developing their sense of social responsibility) as well as activities such as a table quiz, school disco and Seachtain na Gaeilge, Spanish language and culture.

In terms of sport, there are many activities which are new and challenging such as climbing skills, outdoor pursuits, gym, swimming, yoga and skiing.

There are trips to places such as Delphi Resort and also a ski trip.

Students are also given the chance to get to know the world of work through a two week work experience.

Overall, we consider Transition Year an excellent opportunity for the students to mature both personally and socially; to become more aware of their strengths and weaknesses and learn how to deal with difficulties; to take a step back from the academic pressures of exam preparation and explore new areas and thus to be better prepared overall for the worlds of study and work.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Clár na hIdirbhliana 2017-18

Tá clár leathan agus éagsúil leagtha amach don Idirbhliain de réir na treoracha agus spriocanna atá leagtha síos an Roinn Oideachas agus Scileanna.

There is a wide and diverse Transition Year programme in the school as set out by the guidelines and aspirations of the Department of Education and Skills.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”311″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” title=”Schools & Business”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”313″ img_size=”large”][vc_column_text] Watch our Transition Year students: A fantastic short film showing the impact of the Age Action Getting Started computer training classes on the staff, pupils and older learners at Gaelcholáiste Mhuire in Cork! Idirbhliain Read More …

["post-288","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
